Fighting off that holiday season weight gain

The holidays are here — Thanksgiving is in the rear view mirror, but Christmas and the New Year are quickly approaching. That means decorating, family fun and, of course, plenty of eating.

Holiday weight gain isn’t anything new, but over time it can become a real problem.

Typically the average person gains roughly a pound a year — that’s according to research done a few years back at the University of Oklahoma. Some polls and studies will estimate a much higher number, but for those who are already overweight the numbers tend to be higher.

Experts will recommend those who are concerned to be realistic when it comes to setting goals to break the trend — there’s no expectation to go from couch potato to gym rat, but if you can squeeze a little extra activity into your week you’ll likely be happy with the benefits.

On 7 Action News on Thursday morning we took an opportunity to workout with the folks at Disrupt Fitness, a newer circuit training gym in downtown Berkley. The owner, Kathy Chester, is a proponent of the thinking that everyone can do her workouts with slight modifications. Classes in the gym range between 20-year-olds and 60-year-olds, with different abilities and body shapes.

The gym is closing in on it’s one year anniversary, but they’ve already begun to grow.

“If you’re worried about circuit training we also do personal training for those who’ve never done it before,” said Chester, noting that she’s seen real change in the people who attend her classes.

A few recommendations for those launching a new fitness routine during the Holiday season to stave off holiday weight gain: Find a workout buddy to encourage one another to keep at it, make it fun, and don’t forget to make your new routine convenient — if it’s too hard to fit a routine into your current schedule you’re that much less likely to stick to it.
