Former Michigan State University and NBA player Mateen Cleaves is facing sexual assault charges.

Although the charges have been filed in Wayne County, the case stems from a September 14, 2015 incident in Genesee County.

Officials say Cleaves was a a charity golf outing, where he was introduced to the complainant, her boyfriend and several co-workers. After the outing, Cleaves and the group went to a local bar for drinks. That night at around 1:00 a.m. they all left the bar.

That's when the complainant, a 24-year-old woman from Mount Morris, left the bar with Cleaves for what she thought was a trip back to the golf club. Instead, prosecutors say, Cleaves took the woman to a motel in Mundy Township, where he is accused of holding her against her will and sexually assaulting her.

Police say the woman was able to escape and got help from a woman in a nearby room.

The case was investigated by the Mundy Township Police Department. In October the case was transferred to the Wayne County Prosecutor's office by the Genesee County Prosecutor because of a possible conflict of interest by a potential witness.

Cleaves has been charged with Unlawful Imprisonment, Assault with Intent to Commit Criminal Sexual Penetration, Criminal Sexual Conduct Second Degree and two counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct Third Degree.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's office will handle to prosecution of the case, which will be heard in Genesee County.

Cleaves is set to turn himself in on the charges on Thursday.
