Hate on the rise: Why are hate groups growing in metro Detroit?

The election of Donald Trump continues to bring out protesters to the streets.

Many of these people are young students and new to the discourse. But many others have been living among us in relative obscurity, until now.

Bigotry, hate, and racism are certainly getting resurgence -- and it is not one-sided. The Ku Klux Klan is alive and well. So are Black Separatist groups.

One of the voices in the dark lives right here in Metro Detroit.  He is the Commander of the National Socialist Movement. Videos are posted on their website.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has documented 892 hate groups in the United States, 19 in Michigan and 11 in Metro Detroit. They are listed by name and most have their own websites.

Some of those listed are so-called Black Separatists. Efforts by 7 Action News to reach them were not successful.

One group we did reach has well-produced cartoon clips and dozens of podcasts by a leader who goes by the name of Horus the Avenger.

Leaders of the local groups deny they are hate groups -- and they say they are encouraged by the election of Donald Trump. One group is changing its branding.
