GENESEE COUNTY, Mich. (WXYZ) — The Genesee County Health Department is investigating a possible death due to Legionnaires' disease.
Legionnaires’ disease is a very serious type of pneumonia (lung infection) caused by breathing in small droplets of water that contain Legionella bacteria. Symptoms can include cough, shortness of breath, muscle aches, headache, and fever, and usually occur 2-14 days after exposure.
The health department is asking Genesee County residents to contact their health care provider and ask about specific testing for Legionnaires' disease if they experience symptoms and have been around usual sources like hot tubs and decorative fountains, or have visited or stayed in a health care facility, hotel or other large building within the past two weeks.
The investigation is in the very preliminary stage, so no further information is currently available.
