CHIPPEWA COUNTY, Mich. (WXYZ) — Residents in the Upper Peninsula's Chippewa County were asked not to drive on some roads Monday unless absolutely necessary because of hundreds of trees that had fallen onto the roadways.
"Many of our roads are partially blocked by trees," the Chippeway COunty Sheriff's Office said on Facebook Monday. "There is a very high risk of trees blocking the entire roadway."
The downed trees caused a road closure at Mackinac Trail. As of Tuesday, the sheriff's department says many roads are still closed. The trees became weighed down by ice and snow, which caused them to fall onto the roadways.
Deputies also warned of possible downed power lines that are mixed in with the trees.
Emergency crews began cleanup Monday evening, and the road commission is still working to return the roadways to normal.
