Should there be free tampons at schools, for when girls need them? One state lawmaker says yes.

State Rep. Sarah Roberts says in schools they provide toilet paper, paper towel and soap because they are essential for hygiene. She says pads and tampons are essential for hygiene for a female.

House Bill 5426 would require tampons and sanitary napkins be made available free of charge in public buildings and school bathrooms. The representative behind the bill says girls shouldn’t find themselves caught off guard when their period suddenly starts, without exact change to buy what they need.

It happened to Tina Smith’s daughter when she was a kid.

“I had to go to school give her a change of clothes and a tampon to use when if it is right there, she could have taken care of it,” said Smith.

Others we spoke to say families should pay for those products, not the government, but they didn’t want to comment on camera.
