A Detroit man convicted in a deadly dog mauling case was sentenced to 1 year in the Wayne County Jail and 4 years probation today in court.
Judge James Callahan said during the sentencing that he didn't believe a lengthy incarceration for Geneke Lyons would benefit the community given the change he's made in his life. The 43 days Lyons has already served will be credited toward his sentence.
Lyons took time during court to apologize to the mother of the 4-year-old.
Police say Lyons' pit bulls pulled 4-year-old Xavier Strickland from his mother--and then mauled him to death.
The incident happened in December as the boy and his mom were walking past the home.
Police had to shoot the animals to get them off little Xavier.
