(WXYZ) — Another woman has been arrested in connection with the Macomb County adoption scheme that the 7 Investigators have been leading the way on for months. The feds have now charged one of the birth mothers they say was part of the conspiracy with Tara Lee.
When the feds busted Lee, they listed seven birth moms as Jane Does in the court records.
Now Jane Doe number 2 is revealed and she’s charged with wire fraud and conspiracy in this adoption fraud scheme.
FBI agents say Lee preyed on desperate couples across the country who were hoping to adopt babies. The 37-year-old mother from New Haven is locked up, accused of charging those couples thousands of dollars for babies that did not exist.
In all federal prosecutors say Lee took in more than $1.6 million during the last two years.
Now Enhelica Nieves Wiggins has been arrested and charged with wire fraud and conspiracy.
FBI agents say Wiggins “both conspired with and aided and abetted Lee.”
Federal agents say the 29-year-old from Saginaw is a former birth mom who had worked with Lee.
According to charging documents, Wiggins pretended to be other birth mothers in conversations with prospective adoptive parents. While on the phone with one woman, agents say Wiggins pretended to be a pregnant “Jane Doe 7” and told the woman who wanted to adopt “I want somebody to have the baby that’s gonna be really good at it.”
After that call, the feds say Wiggins asked Lee to give her $400, but Lee said no.
Wiggins faced a judge in federal court today. She was released on a $10,000 bond and has to be back in court next month. A federal public defender was appointed for Wiggins. The 7 Investigators have reached out to Wiggins, but so far, she has not responded.
