A hometown Olympic hero is giving girls in Detroit their first chance to learn how to skate.

Gold medalist Meryl Davis kicked off the brand new 'Figure Skating in Detroit' program Saturday. The event marked Day One for 75 kids at Butzel Community Center on the city's west side. 300 girls will be a part of workshops throughout the year.

"Just to see how excited all the girls are is amazing," Davis said. "We've been talking about this program for a while, so to see the girls actually on the ice and having fun is such a good feeling."

Davis and her partner Charlie White announced they would sit out of the 2018 Olympics Games, telling 7 Action Sports' Brad Galli it was a difficult decision, but she's excited for their future.
