MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. (WXYZ) — Macomb County Health Department employees say they have been receiving hundreds of calls about a possible scam.

People from all over the state, as well as outside of Michigan, say they've been getting calls from someone using the department's name and phone numbers, but the calls weren't made by staff.

The department said individuals are falsely displaying the health department's information on consumers' caller IDs and attempting to get Medicare insurance information and other sensitive information.

The department advises the following to protect the safety of anyone who might receive one of the spoof calls:

  • Do not provide any personal or financial information over the phone in these situations
  • Use caution if you are being pressured by a caller for information immediately
  • If you get an inquiry from someone who says they represent a company or a government agency, verify the authenticity of the caller by confirming their phone number in the phone book or on the company/agency's website
