DETROIT (WXYZ) — Detroit fire investigators are working to determine what caused a deadly fire in an apartment building on the city's west side.

A man, believed to be a tenant in his 60s or 70s, was pronounced dead on scene.

The fire started just before 3:30 Monday morning at an apartment building on Tarnow and Gladys, near McGraw.

Edwin Jimenez-Puga was sleeping in a home across the street when the fire broke out.

"The windows started breaking and that’s when yeah, it all caught fire," he said.

He and his uncle jumped into action.

"We ran over there and we were like knocking on the doors, telling them to come outside," Jimenez-Puga told Action News. "We got the dude that lives upstairs out and we ran around and we got the woman and the kid out," he said.

Fire investigators spent hours on scene Monday morning, collecting evidence and speaking with neighbors.

The victim has not yet been identified.

This is a developing story.
