A section of Tireman near Greenfield is now shut down after a giant sinkhole took over the road.
It was caused by an incident that took place not long after 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

The incident could be seen dramatically unfolding on high-definition surveillance video  at a Citgo gas station nearby.

A truck is traveling east on Tireman, just west of Greenfield, when all of a sudden the trailer dropped into the earth.
Dave Khazendar the gas station’s general manager, watched it happen.

“All of a sudden I hear a boom,” said Dave. “We called 911 Dearborn showed up first, then Detroit, DTE…everybody just started showing up.”

Since then, crews have taped off the area. According to the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, the sinkhole is the result of a  collapsed sewer pipe. DWSD crews were also here on the scene.

According to DWSD, no homes and businesses have been affected, but Dave told 7 Action News things were quite chaotic inside his store when it first happened.

“Everybody was panicking,” said Dave. “Everyone just started wondering what happened.”

DWSD told 7 Action News while the problem is being solved, there is no reason to believe water quality has been diminished in the area.

Still, witnesses say the whole ordeal is surreal.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Dave. “You don’t hear of such things happening, especially around here.”

DTE crews have been out in the area because there are gas lines underneath. Crews are checking every 30 seconds to see if there are any gas leaks as a precaution. The road is expected to be shut down until repairs can be made.
