Former Michigan State University basketball star Mateen Cleaves has issued his first statement since being charged with sexual assault.
Wednesday afternoon, Cleaves tweeted a statement saying:
My family and I are devastate by these false charge. I am innocent and the allegations are without merit. We truly appreciate your continued support.

Cleaves was arraigned on the charges Wednesday morning in a move blasted by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, whose office is handling the case.
He is accused of assaulting a woman in Mundy Township last year.
