Today, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan honored those responsible for saving the city's bus fleet from a DDOT garage fire.

The mayor's office says employees of the Detroit Department of Transportation and the Detroit Fire Department managed to help save 75 buses from the fire.

Detroit Department of Transportation Superintendent Laticia Smith didn't know what to do. She and others jumped into action, moving 40-50 buses before they caught fire.

"The other engines turned the water on the buses to wet them down as the DDOT employees drove them out of the middle of the fire," Duggan said. "There wasn't even a bump in service."

Bus drivers then headed out on their routes as firefighters continued to put out the massive fire. In all, only seven buses were destroyed.

"If you could imagine the impact in this city, if we had lost a third of our bus fleet, we would have been worse off than we were when I started in 2014," Duggan said. "People not being able to get to work, people not being able to get to school."
