(WXYZ) — A metro Detroit couple is sharing their story after they were tricked while using social media to adopt a child.

Samantha and David Stewart wanted to have a family. After years of trying, they turned to adoption.

"We met with the director of our agency we went through. She advised us to create online profiles we could use to put ourselves out there in hope that some birth mothers would come across our profiles," David told Good Morning America.

The Stewarts then set up an Instagram account with the handle "@findingbabystewart" and then someone connected with them.

They realized their connection may not have been what they thought.

"I would receive nasty messages saying, 'this isn't gonna work. We're going to find somebody else," Samantha said.

As they continued to look into it, more and more didn't add up, and they determined there wasn't actually a baby, and instead, they were scammed.

"It was grieving a child that didn't exist. It was really hard," Samantha added.

Samantha said that the person wasn't asking for money or anythign material, but she was just doing it to "be mean."

According to GMA, the Stewarts have recently been placed with a baby and are in the final stages of finalizing their adoption.
