After weeks of lowering gas prices, metro Detroit has seen a drastic rise in prices at the pump this week.
According to GasBuddy, average prices in metro Detroit rose 19.3 cents per gallon to $2.77 per gallon. That national average has risen 6.5 cents per gallon to $2.53.
Prices this week are nearly 70 cents per gallon higher than a year ago and nearly 34 cents per gallon higher than a month ago.
"It's been a frenzied week at fuel pumps across the country, but without a hurricane driving up the prices, many motorists have been dumfounded about what's taking place with the unseasonable upward trend," GasBuddy analyst Patrick DeHaan said. "Such a strong weekly upward move is rare in the fall, but is explained by a confluence of factors, including oil prices hitting a new 2017 high, a major pipeline leak resulting in disruption, autumn refinery maintenance, but perhaps among the more surprising - robust demand for gasoline so late in the season."
When looking at prices on Nov. 6 in previous years, the price was $2.07 per gallon in 2016, $2.35 in 2015, $2.93 in 2014, $3.16 in 2013 and $3.43 2012.
