Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette has filed a lawsuit to stop the recount request filed by Green Party Presidential Candidate Jill Stein.
Schuette called the request "frivolous" and "expensive," saying it would cost taxpayers millions of dollars.
“Michigan voters rejected Stein’s candidacy by massive margins but her refusal to accept that state-verified result poses an expensive and risky threat to hard-working taxpayers and abuses the intent of Michigan law,” Schuette said in a release. “We have asked the court to end the recount which Stein is pursuing in violation of Michigan laws that protect the integrity of our elections. It is inexcusable for Stein to put Michigan voters at risk of paying millions and potentially losing their voice in the Electoral College in the process.”
The suit asks the Michigan Board of Canvassers to reject Stein's request for a state-wide recount. She filed the recount request on Wednesday.
On Thursday, representatives for President-Elect Donald Trump filed an objection to the recount which halted the request. The Board of Canvassers is meeting Friday morning.
With the lawsuit, Schuette also filed an emergency motion with the Michigan Supreme Court asking them to bypass the Court of Appeals for immediate consideration.
Schuette filed the suit because "Stein's demand for a recount will be a the expense of Michigan taxpayers," according to the release.
