(WXYZ) — Michigan Congressman Dan Kildee co-sponsored a resolution Friday to end President Donald Trump's national emergency declaration to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Initially introduced by Congressman Joaquin Castro and other U.S. representatives, the resolution will be considered under the National Emergencies Act in the coming weeks. According to the House, "The National Emergencies Act includes a process by which Congress can terminate a national emergency through expedited legislative procedures by enacting a privileged resolution."
Kildee has called the President's emergency declaration "unlawful" and will work to uphold the Constitution.
“As a Member of Congress, I took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. After Mexico refused to pay for it and Congress wouldn't fund it, the President has created a fake national emergency to try and spend American tax dollars on his border wall. The President’s emergency declaration is unlawful and undermines the separation of powers in our Constitution, which gives Congress the clear power of the purse. Congress will act swiftly on this privileged resolution to stop the President’s violation of our Constitution,” said Congressman Kildee.
Trump declared the national emergency on Feb. 17, after failing to secure funding from Mexico and Congress for the border wall.
