(WXYZ) — Michigan lawmakers are cracking down on porch pirates.

On Thursday, the Michigan Senate passed two bills pushing for harsher punishments for package thieves.

Nearly 19,000 complaints of stolen mail were reportedly made in 2017 and 2018. The new bills would make mail theft a state crime, making it easier to prosecute offenders.

A first violation would be a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail. Criminals could receive up to ten years in prison for their second or third offense.

The bills are headed to the Michigan House for a vote.
