More than 1,800 engineers and designers from the auto industry are in Livonia today for a one-day conference that covers innovations in the automotive world.
It's the largest and longest running steel design automotive conference in the world.
The Great Designs in Steel 2016 show runs until 5 p.m. today at the Laurel Manor Conference Center.
Lawrence Kavanagh is the president of the Steel Market Development Institute, the group that hosts the conference.
"There's been a 15-year continuum of innovation between steel and automotive to meet the continually changing requirements for safety, fuel economy and performance," said Kavanagh.
For those in attendance, today isn't just a day of learning, it's a day of collaboration.
"They're going to walk away with the latest technology for steel and how it's being used applied by the automaker," said Jody Hall, vice president of the Steel Market Development Institute, Automotive Market.
Advancements in steel design and functionality is one of the primary factors in a vehicle's efficiency.
