More workers are calling in sick when they are actually OK, according to a new study from CareerBuilder.

According to the study, 40 percent of workers have called in sick in the last 12 months when they weren't. That's up five percent from last year.
The study also found that 28 percent of workers who have a paid tim off (PTO) program still feel the need to make up an excuse for taking the day off.
While nearly half of workers have called in sick when they aren't, just over a third of employers have actually checked up on a sick worker, and 26 percent have fired someone for using a fake excuse.
While some people use an excuse, more than a third of workers say they have come to the office sick instead of staying home, that way they can use sick days when they're actually feeling well.
