Colorado students protest, walk out of schools

Students are pouring out of high schools in Colorado this week in protest of censorship.

About 200 students walked out of Pomona High School in Arvada around 8:30 a.m. today. The Denver Channel reports the protest is about a dispute over an effort to review how classes such as Advanced Placement U.S. History are taught.

According to The Denver Channel, the school district proposed creating a panel that would make sure materials do not "encourage or condone civil disorder, social strife or disregard of the law."

That has many students, parents and educators concerned about censorship.

Students at Arvada, Arvada West and Ralston Valley high schools in the Jefferson County School District, the second largest district in Colorado, were also planning online for walkouts. One page is called “Arvada West Walk Out.” A post on the page reads:

"The plan is to walk out during the passing period between advisement and 3rd period on Tuesday, September 23rd. The point is to make a statement about being against these changes, so instead of simply leaving the school we will line up along 64th with posters, signs, anything that shows that we are standing up for ourselves and our teachers."

A similar Facebook page was created by Pomona High School students encouraging the same thing, The Denver Channel reports.

At least 100 students from Evergreen High School protested Monday, and a handful had the chance to meet with their district superintendent.
