(WXYZ) — Oakland and Washtenaw counties have issued orders reducing crowds in local venues amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Oakland County Health Division has issued an order to reduce occupancy load by 50% at establishments with a food service license.

The order excludes healthcare facilities, long-term care and grocery stores.

It extends to entertainment venues and physical fitness centers, as well.

“This is a proactive step to ensure that our restaurants and other venues can provide our residents with safe environments and protect their employees,” Oakland County Executive David Coulter said. “We are committed to taking every necessary action to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Oakland County.”

The order takes effect from March 16 through April 5.

There are currently 14 reported cases of COVID-19 in Oakland County.

The Washtenaw County Health Department has issued an emergency order reducing the number of people crowding into local bars, restaurants or entertainment venues.

Starting Monday, March 16, venues must cut their maximum occupancy by half through April 5.

“This action is not taken lightly,” said Jimena Loveluck, MSW, Washtenaw County Health Officer. “To slow the impact of COVID-19 in our community and protect everyone’s health, we must take our commitment to prevention seriously. Social distancing is essential now to prevent additional spread as much as possible.”

Washtenaw County has 10 reported cases of COVID-19.
