Word from the mayor's office this morning is that the new Detroit Animal Control Director Melissa Miller is transformational, creative and proactive.

The change comes on the heels of a series of 7 Action News reports highlighting troubling conditions inside the facilities as well as ongoing protests from animal rights groups and pet owners.

Her predecessor, Harry Ward, was often criticized for the conditions of the facilities and the welfare of animals rescued.

The new director we've learned previously served a manager for the Humane Society of the United States. Miller will benefit the DAC in her new role because of her background as a certified professional dog trainer and behavior consultant.

Her first day on the job is today.
