TROY, Mich. (WXYZ) — Troy police are warning of a rumor regarding sexual assaults and robberies occurring in the area.
Police say the information is "completely false" and spreading misinformation creates "unwarranted fear" and damages real crime prevention efforts.
According to a Facebook post from Troy police, "stranger abductions" make up less than one percent o f reported abductions. Last year, there were 20 sexual assaults reported in Troy. All of the incidents involved perpetrators that were known to the victim, police say.
"This does not make the offense “less bad,” but helps us understand the problem and work more effectively to prevent sexual assault," police say.
