TROY, Mich. (WXYZ) — A man suspected of stealing a vehicle was shot by police as officers tried to make a traffic stop in Troy on Tuesday, police said.

The incident happened around 4 p.m. near E. Big Beaver Road and Daley Street, forcing the area to close as police investigate at the scene.

After officers were notified of the stolen blue Hyundai, they tried to box it in, police said. They said the suspect then tried ramming his way out and drove toward an officer who was in the roadway.

“We had some unmarked cars in the area and officers decided to attempt a box on the vehicle while it was slowed or stopped in traffic,” Troy Police Department Capt. Josh Jones said.

An officer fired a gun and shot the driver in the upper body. The suspect vehicle stopped and the man was taken into custody. He was immediately given aid and taken to the hospital, where he is in stable condition.

A passenger inside the vehicle was treated for minor injuries that police say happened when the suspect tried ramming his way out to take off from the scene.

No officers were hurt.

It's unclear at this time how many shots were fired, but a bullet hole was visible in the windshield and the driver's side window was blown out. Police say only one officer opened fire.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office has been asked to complete the investigation, since a Troy officer opened fire.

"The officer is going to be taken off duty and assigned to the chief's office until the entire investigation can be completed," Jones said. “We don't have a ton of information we can release right now because we haven't gathered it yet, so that’s where we’re at right now.”

E. Big Beaver Road at Daley Street has reopened.
