Michigan police using unmarked cars to patrol for distracted drivers

Police across Michigan are taking part in a new crackdown aimed at catching distracted drivers or others who break the law on the road.

The initiative is called "Operation Ghostrider." It involves a police officer riding as a passenger in an unmarked vehicle. That officer will be scanning the roads looking for drivers who engage in dangerous behaviors behind the wheel such as texting while driving or running red lights.

The officer will then contact another officer in a marked patrol car, and that officer will pull over the driver.

It's illegal to text and drive in Michigan. Drivers can be fined $100 for their first offense and $200 for subsequent offenses.
