Bruce Perfect left court Wednesday afternoon devastated as he embraces family members.
The 40-year-old father says he is beyond heartbroken after the death of his 21-month-old boy, Anthony Rumford.
The toddler was found with burns to 50 percent of his body after he fell into a bathtub full of scalding hot water Monday night.
“I hate myself for the fact that I was not right there at that point,” said Perfect. “I didn’t sleep for almost three days.”
Loved ones believe the toddler somehow turned the water on himself and then fell in. They told 7 Action News the boy’s mother, Angle Rumford tried to resuscitate him.
The boy’s 13-year-old brother pushed her out of way and performed CPR until first responders got to the scene. Sadly, the little Anthony did not make it.
Wednesday, there was a custody hearing for Anthony’s parents. Family members came to learn details about what exactly happened.
It was revealed in court, that there was drug paraphernalia inside Angel’s home and that the older children had been in foster care before. The kids were not living with Bruce before Anthony’s death.
The court determined that Bruce’s home was not suitable for kids and that he had consumed alcohol and drugs recently, while caring for the children.
He says he was dealing with the loss of a child and denies drug use.
Both parents have lost custody. Bruce told 7 Action News he is willing to clean up his act to get his children back.
“Oh I’m going to fight,” said Perfect. "Trust and believe - do what ever it takes to get these babies home.”
