UPDATE: School will be back in session tomorrow. The odor was caused by a failed light bulb and ballast in the auxiliary gymnasium.

Students, staff and teachers at Cass Technical High School were dismissed at 12:30 p.m. due to a strong odor detected.

Detroit Public Schools District Spokesperson Chrystal Wilson said the fire department deployed HazMat to the school for an air quality test.

The test confirmed that the air quality is safe. However, the source of the odor is still unknow. The school district is conducting thorough investigation of an isolated area where the odor is more prominent.

Wilson said the district will update staff and students regarding the status of returning to school tomorrow.
