UAW-Ford is offering free mammogram screenings for uninsured and underinsured women 40 and older in the Detroit area.

The fourth annual event is in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and will be held Monday through Oct. 22 at Northland Radiology in Southfield.

Screenings are confidential. Women younger than 40 with family histories of breast cancer also can get the free screenings.

Northland Radiology mammogram technician and radiology safety officer Pam Bradford says "an average of 50 percent of uninsured women in metro Detroit have not had a mammogram in the last two years."

She says the breast cancer survival rate is 97 percent when detected early.

UAW-Ford is a collaboration between United Auto Workers members and Dearborn-based Ford Motor Co.
