Detroit police have a 17-year-old in custody in the murder of a mother who was killed while picking up her 11-year-old son from basketball practice.

It happened at the Light Guard Armory at 8 Mile and Ryan.

Witnesses say they saw someone standing by the woman's car door.

After the shooting, the woman was able to get out of the car and flagged down someone to help. She asked the witness to call 911 because she had been shot. The woman died at the scene.

Witnesses were able to give police a description of the suspect. He was taken into custody at a bus stop a short distance away.

Sources say it appears to have been an attempted carjacking or a street robbery.

Officers say he attempted to run, but police were able to catch him. A gun was discovered in his possession.

It's not yet clear what the motive in the shooting may be.
