Several people called in the emergency after a teen driver lost control of his mother's Ford Flex Saturday afternoon and wound up in the frigid water of Lake St. Clair.

"Actually there's a person on top of the car," one of those callers told the 911 operator, in a recording obtained by 7 Action News.

Sixteen-year old Nolan Mullins of Harrison Township had to scramble out of the SUV as it started sink. He wasn't far from shore, but soaking wet, he stood on top of the vehicle until the Coast Guard arrived on scene.

Mullins told police the steering on the Ford Flex locked up on him as he drove north on Lake Shore Drive in Grosse Pointe Shores. The car went over the curb as well as the break wall near Clairview Road.

An ambulance took the teen to St. John Hospital for treatment. The Detroit Free Press reported he was watched closely until his body temperature returned to normal.

The young man's mother told 7 Action News he was back in school today. She declined to discuss the incident further and said he son was not commenting either.
