It was supposed to be the best day of Karin Humes’ brother’s life.

On Saturday, Bill Cunningham married his fiancee, Holly, in Shelby Township.

The couple received thousands of dollars in gift cards, cash and checks. They hoped to use the money to help pay for the wedding.

“Toward the end of the night, the bride and groom were just kind of saying their goodbyes and thanking everybody - just kind of busy with that,” said Humes.  “Family members were loading their vehicle. They were actually staying at a hotel and they were shuttled to that hotel.”

Their Chevy Equinox was left in the venue’s parking lot with all the money inside.

The next day the newlyweds discovered their SUV’s back window had been smashed out.

“The bird cages with gift cards and money had been taken,” said Humes.  “To ruin the beginning and the start to somebody’s marriage breaks my heart. As the older sister it really got to me. It was gut-wrenching yesterday.”

So Karin started a GoFundMe page to help her brother, who is a firefighter in South Carolina, and his wife. She says they also learned a lesson or two.

“Evil is out there and things like this happen. Definitely don’t leave your gifts in the car,” said Humes. “Everybody is healthy and happy and still in love and that doesn’t deter that. However it does kind of put a damper on things.”
