SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — All across the country people are getting out of their homes and gathering in their communities to celebrate the Declaration of Independence of the United States.
“Fourth of July is a celebration of freedom, history, America,” said Buck Sewell, the owner of Buck N Dink’s Food Truck.
7 Action news spoke to Sewell as he worked at a food truck rally in Shelby Township, held in before the third annual Fireworks Festival. He says the holiday is about the American Dream, which his business is for him.
He says as a veteran he knows how precious the opportunities people have in our country are. He encourages everyone to celebrate, but also be vigilant.
Police agree. Ahead of the Fourth of July the FBI sent out a bulletin calling on local law enforcement agencies to be vigilant.
While there was no known plot, the bulletin said it is possible international or domestic terrorists could see the holiday as a symbolic target.
“If you see something, say something. That is the biggest point,” said Deputy Chief Mark Coil of the Shelby Township Police Department.
Coil says Shelby Township coordinates security plans over the course of the year, in preparation for this event. He says the community plays a part in security. It is not about being worried and not going out. It is about simply always being vigilant.
