Residents may have to foot a $150 million repair bill for Fraser sinkhole

The cost to repair the sinkhole in Fraser is very high, but who will be paying for the fix?

They’re looking at $150 million dollars to fix the sinkhole.

The Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice Miller says without federal funds residents will foot the bill.

Miller says without federal assistance a $150 million dollar bond would be issued.

That means residents would be paying 8-to-9 percent more on their sewer bills. That’s about 40 dollars a year extra for the next 25 years.

The broken sewer line affects about 400,000 people in 12 Macomb County communities.

The sinkhole was discovered Christmas Eve.

Three homes are permanently condemned because of it.

Bill increases could take several years to be implemented, but could become a reality as soon as this summer.
