Fifteen-year-old Corey Maison wears a shirt that reads “misfit.”  It is a statement against bullying.  She says as a small child she knew she was different. She was born a boy, but at only 9-years-old told her parents she felt she was a girl.

Her parents respected her choice.

Bullies at times tormented her.

“No kid should have to go through that pain, wanting to kill yourself, because of people being mean to you,” said Corey.

Her mom told her she was not alone.  She meant it in a way Corey couldn’t have imagined.

“I went, you know what, if my child has the guts to show the world who she really is, I will too,” said Corey’s mom.

Mom revealed she too struggled with her gender identity.  She decided to live openly and authentically as a transgender man. Erica Maison became Eric Maison. Just a few weeks ago he underwent a double mastectomy as part of the transition.

They have spoken out on Seven Action News before.  This week their story aired on Australia’s 60 Minutes.  They say knowledge will protect others.

“There isn’t enough understanding of what it is to be transgender,” said Eric.

Before deciding to transition he feared the impact it would have on his family and marriage.  Ultimately, it made both stronger.

“I am more comfortable in my own skin,” said Eric.  “And that has helped my marriage.”

They say many people assume they are unique, but they have met many other transgender parents with transgender children.  They say it is no coincidence.  They believe it is evidence that being transgender is not a choice.  It is part of who you are.

It is overwhelming to see their story be told around the world, but they say it gives them purpose.

“I feel like I am helping people, like I am making a difference the world,” said Corey.
