Big changes are coming to parking in Birmingham.
The city is working to add spaces and to be in compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act. But it will mean some folks who haven't had to pay will need to start.
The yellow space at the Community House is dedicated to handicapped parking. If you have a tag, you can park and you don't have to pay.
But that is going away.
All of the yellow spaces will be gone soon and, instead, the city is going to install 60 more parking spaces citywide - strictly for the disabled and they will be metered.
Some Birmingham residents are upset by this, and they're worried it will impact seniors and their mobility the most.
But city leaders say, while the old way of parking was convenient, it's not going to be feasible during new rounds of construction and it won't work now that the city must add 60 spots to meet ADA standards.
They're charging because it makes sense.
The changes will start this summer. But there will be a grace period for people to get used to the new parking situation.
