Christmas came early for eight-year-old Justin Hurt and 14 other kids who got to "Shop with a Hero."

The annual charity event in Madison Heights brought 15 children together with police and firefighters who took them on a shopping spree at the local Meijer store, which provided hundreds of dollars in free gift cards for purchases.

"It's just great to see the joy in the kids and their faces when they're able to pick out some toys and some items for their family members that they maybe couldn't normally get," said Madison Heights Chief of Police Corey Haines.

The event was uplifting for the heroes, whose badges were wrapped in black in memory of Wayne State University police officer Collin Rose.

Rose, who was shot and killed in the line of duty last week, was laid to rest just hours before the event.

"A bright spot to enjoy part of the day that we normally couldn't," Haines said.
