Man arraigned in deadly hit-and-run of bicyclist in Hazel Park

The man charged in the deadly hit-and-run of a bicyclist in Hazel Park was arraigned on charges Friday morning.

Joseph Dunning, 50, is charged with failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death, a 5-year felony.

Dunning went into the Hazel Park Police Department on Wednesday, Oct. 12 and confessed to the crash.

Police say Dunning hit 54-year-old Cordie Howlett near John R. and Woodward Heights at Howlett was riding his bike. Dunning was driving a dark blue 2007 Chevy Trailblazer.

An off-duty officer and passerby stopped to help Howlett after Dunning drove off, but he later died from his injuries.

Howlett's family was in the courtroom and was emotional when Dunning walked into the courtroom.

Bond was set at $150,000 cash or surety, and if Dunning does post bond, he will be on a GPS and alcohol tether, will submit to random screenings and can't be in any establishment that sells alcohol.
