It is a big question to ask or be asked in high school, “Will you go to prom with me?”
At West Bloomfield High School they have been seeing extravagant “promposals” all week in special education teacher Debbie Shafran’s class.
“This is a dream come true,” said Janis Shiffer, School Social Worker. “Our students are going to prom.”
School staff, students, and parents have all worked together to coordinate special promposals for special education students. They have recorded video of them, allowing them to share the joy of what they are doing.
In some cases volunteers with a program called Link that connects general education students with students with special needs are accepting a promposal. In other cases classmates are connecting.
The school choir has at times helped set the mood.
“These promposals are wonderful to do,” said Shafran. “The kids say what they want and do what they want. We are just here to move them along.”
