Michigan State Police say a woman has died after being shot in an officer involved shooting in Dearborn.
Witnesses say the situation began with a traffic stop. However, they say the female driver of a Chevy HHR tried to take off and that's when a Dearborn police officer fired into the car.
One witness told 7 Action News that it looked like the woman was trying to run over the officer. Police say she is a Detroit woman in her 30s who had just left Fairlane Mall, where she was spotted looking noticeably distressed.
The shooting happened around 4:30 p.m. The scene is at Hubbard and Southfield, near Fairlane Mall. Hubbard Road is currently closed for the investigation. The road is expected to be closed for several hours.
Michigan State Police were called to the scene to aid in the investigation. They say the woman also tried to run over mall security, before she left the mall property.
The woman who was shot was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
A police office did sustain minor injuries. Officers say he suffered a twisted ankle.
MSP has opened an investigation into the incident--and the Dearborn officer is on leave until the investigation is completed.
