Tiny dogs left in shopping cart in bitter cold

Posted

Three tiny dogs, each weighing just two to four pounds, were found in the bitter cold by workers at Walmart in Woodhaven on Thursday.

The dogs, appearing to be a Yorkshire Terrier, a Maltese, and a long-haired Chihuahua, were found outside in the parking lot in a shopping cart.

They were in a collapsible hamper that was covered with garbage bag.

Woodhaven Police say surveillance video shows a possible suspect entering the parking lot early Thursday around midnight. The person appears to be driving a gray Pontiac Sunfire.

The dogs were taken to the Woodhaven-Trenton Animal Shelter before being placed in the temporary care of foster families as Woodhaven Police investigate.

Thankfully, Amy Crum, the shelter's coordinator, says a local veterinarian has determined that the dogs, two females and one male, appear to be healthy and in good condition.

Police are trying to determine if the owner is the one who abandoned the dogs or if they were stolen and then dumped.

It's estimated that six to seven hours passed before workers arrived and found the trio in what, at first, appeared to be a suspicious package left in a shopping cart.
