(WXYZ) — The top Democratic contenders for the 2020 presidential race hit the stage in Houston Thursday evening, and like the previous two debates, hopefuls weighed in on health care, gun control, education and other topics affecting the nation.

There were digs at President Trump, as well as the competitors challenging each others' policies.

By the end of the nearly three-hour event, Republicans offered a response to the debate.

Republican National Committee Spokesperson, Michael Joyce, responded to the debate saying, "Tonight, voters watched the Democrat field champion policies that would reverse the progress we have seen under President Donald Trump. By advocating for government-run healthcare, open borders, and the elimination of fossil fuels, Democrats continued to showcase their socialist policies and they will be soundly rejected in 2020.”

RNC Chairwoman, Ronna McDaniel, also responded in a statement saying, "As the 2020 presidential field narrows, American voters continue to hear about the many ways Democrat candidates would hurt our communities and stifle opportunity with their radical, socialist policies," said Chairwoman McDaniel. "Tonight’s debate featured no new ideas to empower Americans as they work and raise their families. Instead, Democrats again promised tax hikes, ending private health insurance, and a total government takeover of our lives. While 2020 Democrats expose their lack of vision for our country’s future, President Trump will continue to fight for the American people."
