To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Salvation Army Donut Girls, the Salvation Army of Metro Detroit will host a ceremony and serve complimentary donuts and coffee in conjunction with the Michigan Military Technical & Historical Society.

The event will take place on Friday, June 2, at the Michigan Military Technical & Historical Society. It's located at 16600 Stephens in Eastpointe, Michigan. The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. Public tours will take place from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

The brief tour will highlight the history of the Donut Girls, followed by tours of the Military Museum featuring a special exhibition showcasing the  centennial anniversary of World War 1.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information, call (248) 443-5500.

Originally called "Donut Lassies,"  the women of the Salvation Army volunteered on the front lines by serving donuts to World War I soldiers. The women served nearly 9,000 of the treats every day amidst gunfire and bombs, giving soldiers a small token of hope and home.
