When you think of "city living" in places like New York or Chicago, you think of high rises and nice views. That is what you get with The Griswold.
Mayor Mike Dugan said, "People are moving back into Detroit faster than we can build places for them."
The Griswold is Detroit's newest high-rise apartment building.
It sits on top of a 10 floor parking structure at Griswold and Michigan.
"Oh my God, the views are beautiful. I love what they did with window to floor ceilings and on the corner units, you can see out both directions." Mayor Duggan toured some of the 80 units.
The apartments are on five floors starting on the 11th floor. They all boast a modern look with stainless steel appliances.
The apartments range from $1,500 for a one-bedroom to $3,700 for a three-bedroom unit.
So far, half of the units have already been leased.
The mayor says the rental housing market is maxed out and it's going to take new construction, like The Griswold, to keep up with the demand.
"I watched for decades as people moved out and these buildings emptied, so to see them fill and to see them have to build on top of existing buildings is really exciting," he added.
The project took about a year to complete and $24 million.
The plan started in 2007 and it was envisioned to be for-sale condo units but after the housing market collapsed in 2008, the project turned into rental apartments.
