Smokers urged to quit smoking during the Great American Smokeout

Posted

If you're trying to quit smoking, this is the month to do it.

The Great American Smokeout takes place this year on November 17th.

The event, put together by the American Cancer Society, urges people to stop smoking for 24 hours in hopes they will quit permanently.

If you're trying to stop smoking, doctors recommend following these five steps:

  1. Set a quit date
  2. Tell your family and friends that you plan to stop smoking
  3. Anticipate and plan for challenges.  The urge to smoke typically lasts only 3-5 minutes.  Experts recommend you come up with a plan to handle cravings when the urge hits.
  4. Remove tobacco from your home, workplace and car
  5. Talk to a doctor about quit options
