WEEKEND TRAFFIC: I-696 eastbound closure canceled

and last updated

A planned I-696 eastbound closure that was set to begin Friday night at 9 p.m. has been canceled.

The closure was supposed to run from the I-275/I-96/M-5 interchange for about nine miles to Telegraph. MDOT officials confirm the cancelation is due to the wet weather on Friday afternoon.

The roadway is too damp to pour the new concrete.

This would have been the third weekend closure for I-696 that we've seen this summer and the second time the eastbound lanes would have been closed.

It's all part of a $75 million project that includes concrete repairs on I-696, repairs on 16 bridges, drainage improvement and work on intelligent transportation systems.

The closure will likely happen next weekend, but MDOT officials have not made the final call yet.
