Detroit police say two people were found dead inside a Detroit Public Lighting Department substation on Friday morning.

The building is located near the intersection of Gratiot and Harper on the city's east side.

The men have not been identified and Detroit Police Cpt. Kyra Hope says it appears they are in their 20s or 30s.

"One apparently touched 24,000 volts and it transferred over to the other."

Cpt. Hope says it appears the men were trying to steal copper. Investigators found tools next to their bodies.

Police say around 4 a.m. the Detroit Public Lighting Dept. noticed a transformer at the unmarked facility was out.

"A transformer went down and they sent a technician, they meaning Public Lighting sent technicians out and they walked around the building and discovered there was a door that was breached open already."

She described the scene inside as horrible, asking anyone who needs help to reach out to a shelter or organization before turning to a dangerous crime like this.

"This is not the way to go, breaking and entering, the copper thefts and what not, it's to your own demise."
