US Department of Education awards National Blue Ribbon to 13 Michigan schools

The U.S. Department of Education has recognized 13 Michigan schools as "exemplary and high-performing."

The 2018 National Blue Ribbon award recognizes annually public and non-public schools. According to a release, there are 420 National Blue Ribbon schools to be honored this year at a ceremony on Nov. 7 - 8 in Washington D.C.

Schools representing Michigan include: 

  • Achieve Charter Academy (Achieve Charter Academy School District)
  • Akron-Fairgrove Elementary School (Akron-Fairgrove School District)
  • Canton Charter Academy (Canton Charter Academy School District)
  • Dearborn STEM Middle School (Dearborn City School District)
  • Eagle Lake Elementary School (Edwardsburg Public School District) 
  • Ernest W. Seaholm High School (Birmingham City School District)
  • Holmes Elementary School (Spring Lake Public School District)
  • International Academy (Oakland School District)
  • Jeffers Elementary School (Spring Lake Public School District)
  • Lake Hills Elementary School (Grand Haven Area Public School District)
  • Pine River Elementary School (Bullock Creek School District)
  • Rosy Mound School (Grand Haven Area Public School District)
  • Village Oaks Elementary School (Novi Community School District)

“Michigan schools are creating high-quality learning environments that encourage all students to achieve and succeed,” said Interim State Superintendent Sheila Alles. “Congratulations to these fine schools. Their academic accomplishments serve as milestones to celebrate on our way to make Michigan a Top 10 education state in 10 years.”

The award is given to schools where students "either achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap."

In the 36-year history of the National Blue Ribbon Schools program, more than 8,800 public and private schools in America have been recognized. 

Schools are measured based upon student test scores, subgroup student scores and graduation rates, according to a press release.
