MONROE, Mich. (WXYZ) — Police are investigating an injury crash that happened overnight Wednesday in Monroe.

On March 12 around 2:50 a.m., the Monroe Police Department and Monroe Fire Department responded to a single vehicle injury crash on N. Custer Road near Ann Marie Drive.

Police say the vehicle left the roadway and struck multiple trees and two utility poles.

The vehicle was on fire when crews arrived to the scene, but the male driver had already exited the vehicle.

The male driver was taken to an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash. The roadway and bicycle/pedestrian path were closed due to the damage to the utility poles.

Police say one pole was leaning over the roadway, and one pole was broken causing wires to hang low to the roadway.

N. Custer Rd. and the bicycle/pedestrian path will likely remain closed for several hours until utility crews can repair the damage.

Drivers are urged to take an alternate route.
